Danielle Laidley’s player ratings: Every West Coast Eagle and Fremantle Docker ranked after round nine

It was very hard to objectively complete the ratings for the game as we will never know the emotion each Fremantle player was processing on the night. It was a tough weekend for both WA clubs in more ways than one as Fremantle’s inaccuracy cost them any chance of challenging the number one Swans while West Coast picked up more injuries in their 66-point smashing at the hands of Collingwood. Here’s who starred and who struggled. FREMANTLE 1 Jeremy Sharp: 8 Very influential wingman for his team on the night. Had 28 disposals, kicked 2.2 with nine score involvements. 2 Andrew Brayshaw: 7 Busy early, doing most of his work supporting an under-siege defence. Made to handball by the pressure from the Sydney midfield. Had seven score involvements. Was a solid return to form. 3 Alex Pearce: 7 Kept Logan McDonald under wraps when opposed during the game, short of the mark with contest and the free kick against Joel Amartey. Stood tall for the team on an emotional night. 4 Caleb Serong: 6 Lone hand in first half with 24 disposals, finishing with 34 for the game. Didn’t amount to his normal impact on games. Zero score involvements, and a lack of penetration for the game. 5 Luke Ryan: 6 Made to defend in first half when the game was on the line and couldn’t play his own style and generate his kicking game until later in the game. 6 Jaeger O’Meara: 6 Pressure was good early, played his role for the team, 17 touches, seven score involvements, won contested ball and clearances. 7 James Aish: 6 With the Swans minimising Jordan Clark’s influence, he was left to run and carry and penetrate the game. Had five inside 50’s and four rebounds, didn’t defend under pressure when it was needed in the first half. 8 Brandon Walker: 6 Poor defensive crumb for the Swans’ first goal. Did give run and carry on the night kicking a goal. Fought the fight all night. 9 Nat Fyfe: 6 Mixed night with six score involvements and four tackles. On the debit side was seven turnovers and six frees against. 10 Hayden Young: 6 Slow start, was under pressure from the swans midfield, only gathering eight of his 23 disposals when the game was up for grabs. Eight score involvements was a positive. 11 Heath Chapman: 5 Under extreme pressure early, finishing the first half with one kick and five handballs. Couldn’t get his mark game going in Fremantle’s rebound 50 chains of possession. 12 Matthew Johnson: 5 Another Fremantle midfielder made to handball and stop the team’s uncontested marks. Had 13 possessions in the first half when game was there to be won. 13 Luke Jackson: 5 Dominated by Brodie Grundy in the ruck, Fremantle lost clearance strength. Effort was there, gaining 14 touches in the first half when team was under siege. 14 Bailey Banfield: 4 No influence on the game or in the contest in the first half, with just three touches and one tackle and finishing with 13 disposals. 15 Sam Switkowski: 4 Couldn’t use his kicking skills because of the Swans’ pressure. Had one kick and nine handballs in the first half, but four tackles as a pressure forward was a highlight. 16 Jordan Clark: 4 Swans nailed the kicking rebound defender, keeping him to one kick and four handballs in the first half. Denied Fremantle any kick/mark out of defence. 17 Patrick Voss: 4 Forward pressure was there, did miss a few opportunities to kick goals. 18 Josh Treacy: 4 Crashing packs and pressure was below par, could not influence game in first half, kicked 1.1 in the third quarter. 19 Josh Draper: 3 Must kill the ball in marking contests, had hands for all night. No influence with the ball during the game. 20 Tom Emmett: 3 Started the game with 3 touches and 1 tackle in the first quarter, well below par for the next 3 quarters 3 21 Michael Frederick: 3 Very quiet first half, with two disposals and one tackle, but better in the third before being subbed off for Michael Walters. 22 Jye Amiss: 3 Hard night for the key forward, opportunities were rare in the first half. 23 Michael Walters: 2 Came on as the sub, played 30 mins of football for one kick. West Coast 1. Liam Duggan: 8 Outstanding game, stood tall defensively, used ball well, 676 metres gained was impressive. Went into the midfield after half time, to help stop some of the bleeding. 2. Alex Witherden: 7 Stood tall all game, showed courage on a number of occasions, defending well with a high work rate. Six score involvements and 494 metres gained was a feature. 3. Tom Barrass: 7 As always stood tall in defence, intercepting and rebounded out of defensive 50 even under extreme pressure. 4. Reuben Ginbey: 7 Got his hands on the ball early, but didn’t use the ball well. Went to half back in the second half and stood tall. 5. Tom Cole: 6 Defended well at times under extreme pressure, did provide offence, could of penetrated the game better. 6. Brady Hough: 6 Can hold his head high playing on the Norm Smith medallist who kicked two goals. Did his job under extreme pressure. 7. Jeremy McGovern: 6 Started well marking, spoiling and providing rebound under pressure. Landed awkwardly when flying for mark just before half time and took no further part. 8. Luke Edwards: 6 Reasonably consistent across the game gaining 16 disposals at 100 percent efficiency, and finishing with a goal. 9. Tim Kelly: 5 Succumbed to the Collingwood onslaught in the midfield in the first half and had only 4 possessions. Got back into the game in the second half with high work-rate. 10. Jamie Cripps: 5 Quiet first quarter with limited opportunities, kept a high work-rate for the rest of the game laying five tackles, and finishing with 17 touches. 11. Bailey Williams: 5 Had his hands full against Darcy Cameron in the ruck and around the ground, never stops competing. 12. Harley Reid: 5 Collingwood gave him no breathing space with gang tackling and extreme pressure, which made him handball a lot. Managed to get away with six kicks in the last quarter when the sting went out of the game. 13. Tyrell Dewar: 5 Struggled early, but had some real class touches, kicking 1.1 from his nine disposals. 14. Dom Sheed: 5 Looked reactive at stoppages, holding and trailing the contest. A free against at centre bounce, turning to dissent was disappointing for the team. 15. Liam Ryan: 5 Didn’t touch the ball in the first quarter, flew for his marks in the second quarter to give him confidence. Finished with 11 disposals, eight marks and kicked 1.2 to finish off the game feeling better about himself. 16. Campbell Chesser: 4 Looking for a four-quarter effort, as his next step. Had little impact in the first half but was much better after half time. Needed to bodyline the ball and his opponent for Lipinski’s first goal, then supported the defence well making a strong spoil. 17. Jack Williams: 4 Not enough opportunities, continues to show his marking is a feature of his game. Struggled in the ruck. 18. Jayden Hunt: 4 Started well on the wing gaining 5 touches, playing with width. Would disappointed to have only 7 disposals for the rest of the game. The team needs more consistency. 19. Harvey Johnston: 4 Came on at quarter time as a sub, showed enough with some class touches. 20. Ryan Maric: 4 Didn’t get many opportunities with the lack of inside 50’s early. Shows each week he has a future with strong marks and competing each week. 21. Josh Rotham: 4 Not involved in much offence during the game, spoilt well and defended under pressure at times. 22. Jack Darling: 4 Didn’t see much of the football. Two ferocious tackles and self-less to shepherd ball through for Dewar’s first goal. 23. Jack Petruccelle: 2 No influence before being subbed out early with injury.
