Yusuf Khan chased by tax officials in the District Court for $580,000

Tax officials are chasing Yusuf Khan for nearly $600,000 linked to businesses including The Library nightclub. A writ filed in the District Court shows the Australian Taxation Office’s deputy commissioner lodged a claim against Mr Khan in February for alleged debts totalling more than $580,000. The outstanding cash is from four businesses and includes director penalties for unpaid taxes, superannuation guarantee payments and interest charges. About half of the bill was for Perth City Enterprises, which ran The Library nightclub. Mr Khan had been director but that business collapsed into liquidation earlier this year — in the aftermath of a statutory demand by the ATO for an unpaid bill. A spokesman for Mr Khan said the ATO’s claims in the District Court “will be vigorously defended and are denied”. That follows comments in June that Perth City Enterprises had “consistently complied with its obligations, including during the COVID period when many companies in Australia accrued ATO debt”. The West Australian does not suggest that Mr Khan is guilty of any offence or wrong-doing, including in relation to his tax affairs. An ATO spokeswoman said the office “does not comment on matters before the Court and cannot comment on the tax affairs of any individual or entity due to our obligations of confidentiality and privacy under the law”. Also on the claim filed to the District Court was cash allegedly owed by the club’s landlord Perth City Investments, property development business Khan JV, and Subiaco City Enterprises. The matter is due in court later this month. It has been a tumultuous 18 months for the businessman and socialite wife Cynthia Lu. The latest financial battle comes less than a day after the former nightclub’s site was raided by WA Police’s liquor enforcement unit. Mr Khan was the victim of a shocking alleged Northbridge stabbing in August. Earlier this year, private tax records revealed by The West showed Mr Khan had been chased by the ATO in 2023. His spokesman refuted the magnitude of that debt. Mr Khan and Ms Lu were linked to builder Modco Residential, which hit the wall last year leaving dozens of homes unfinished. Ms Lu had also been in the ATO’s sights but nine charges against her in the Magistrate’s Court were dropped in April.
