It was revealed Regis Resources boss Jim Beyer has a slightly unusual way of trying to relax when he’s not managing the mid-tier gold miner.

The former Mt Gibson Iron boss apparently has a penchant for tinkering with pinball machines.

The strange pastime originates from his job repairing the antiquated entertainment devices in his youth.

Beyer tried to explain some of the mechanics of the machines at the start his presentation but was largely met with confused looks from delegates.

Lynas’ Lacaze on hunt for finer things

Lynas Rare Earths boss Amanda Lacaze is clearly not afraid to admit she probably likes some extra comforts in her lodgings at Diggers than her average male peers.

“I am probably the only CEO among all those Marks and Peters that (Fortescue boss) Elizabeth Gaines identified that wants a hairdryer in my room,” she told delegates during the introduction to her presentation.

“I did ask for a review of the turndown service, but I had somewhat less success,” she said.

Woosha’s photography talents

The Bull informed you the other day about the AFL stars past and present adding some star power to the annual event. We have also now been told former West Coast Eagles champion and coach John Worsfold was swamped by some of Kalgoorlie’s local footy talent at an event on Tuesday night.

Woosha was there to spruik his own company - he is the manager for people and culture at Emeco Group.

In his sporting glory days he would’ve been inundated with photo requests but on Tuesday night the tables had turned. A group of students asked HIM to take their photo of them in their mining carnival jumpers.

It must have been a rare moment for the WCE great to be on the other side of the lens!

Wild weather can’t stop Gala Dinner

It looks like Wednesday night’s WesTrac Gala Dinner at the annual Diggers and Dealers Mining Forum in Kalgoorlie will go ahead as planned.

Organisers had feared the format of the event would need to be rejigged after bad weather delayed flights bringing in catering staff and supplies.

There were also fears 90km/h winds could make the massive marquee — the biggest in the southern hemisphere — in which it is held unsafe.

Earlier in the day, booth holders were told to pack up and exit the marquee ahead of a planned closure of the venue at 10am.

But the winds have since eased and the sun was shining on the Goldfields town early Wednesday afternoon and the catering staff and supplies needed to host the event have arrived.

For the uninitiated, the glitzy dinner on the final night of Diggers usually involves a mystery high-profile entertainment act and provides the climax for the annual bash, including the presentation of the conference’s prestigious awards.

The Bull heard there was the annual hunt on for spare tickets. At Tuesday night’s WASM sundowner students had a box pleading for passes if people weren’t staying for the dinner. With the cost of a ticket above the social budget of most students, it’s not surprising they put out the begging bowl.

Weather has already played havoc with delegates trying to attend Diggers this year, forcing many flights to be cancelled or delayed.

On Tuesday, Fortescue Metals Group boss Elizabeth Gaines was forced to deliver her swansong presentation virtually, and on Monday, Syrah Resources managing director Shaun Verner had to present via Zoom from Perth Airport.
