Rare earths rush boosts financing for ASX-listed explorers to 2021 highs of $3.5b, according to BDO report

A burgeoning government focus on rare earth elements has supercharged investment in mining exploration to levels not seen since 2021. Financing inflows for ASX-listed explorers surged 81 per cent between the June and September quarters to $3.5 billion, according to a new report from BDO, marking the highest quarterly total since December 2021. “Historically the weakest fundraising quarter, the September 2025 quarter delivered its strongest performance since we began our analysis in 2013,” BDO stated. Hype for local rare earth explorers hit fever pitch in the lead up to a $3.1b mining and refining alliance — geared towards rare earth projects — signed last month by Anthony Albanese and Donald Trump. A bevy of ASX-listed juniors and mid-tiers cashed in across September and October, with the likes of Arafura Rare Earths, Northern Minerals, Australian Strategic Materials, Brazilian Rare Earths and St George Mining collectively raising close to $1b. Lithium financing staged a comeback in the September quarter, headlined by Liontown’s $372 million raise — which included a $50m contribution from the Federal Government. Gold continued its strong capital raising momentum during the quarter. Zinc re-emerged after a nine-month absence, driven largely by Develop Global’s $180m capital injection, while uranium funding lifted sharply with three explorers securing $224m dollars against the backdrop of renewed global interest in nuclear energy. The tsunami of fresh capital across multiple commodities trickled through to exploration expenditure climbing 16 per cent to $844m, returning to levels last seen in 2023. Cash balances rose to an average of $11m, the first lift in a year, while net investing outflows increased to $511m as explorers pushed ahead with developments. BDO global natural resources and energy leader Sherif Andrawes said the intensity of the funding surge “marks a turning point”, signalling that the race for “strategic resources” is accelerating at a pace “the market has not seen in years”. “The scale of these raisings tells you exactly where global priorities are shifting,” he said. “Rare earths and lithium are being funded because governments are stepping in, not because commodity prices are strong. This is about capability, not cycles. “Investors are backing assets that matter to energy security, electrification and industrial capability.”
