Paris Olympics highlight corporate battles between major labels Nike, Adidas, Asics, Hoka, On Running

The Olympics — to purists, at least — are about the sport and the competition, but they’re an increasingly high-stakes sport for the corporate giants that back the 19-day event. Few are feeling the pressure as deeply as Nike. Once the toast of the sportswear and equipment sector, the “Just Do It” crew is worth $US100 billion ($153b) less now than it was three years ago, when the Summer Games were last held. Rival Puma is also feeling the heat, reporting depressed consumer sentiment, and lowering its expectations of profits. It, too, expects to capitalise on the Olympic momentum. Giants of the 1990s and 2000s, Nike and Puma epitomise in sportswear what’s being seen in many other sectors — fragmentation and growing consumer interest in niche or specialised brands. In this case, the likes of Hoka and On Running are eating into much larger rivals’ market share. All are using the Olympics to promote their offerings and increase their share of the market. But even the upstarts aren’t immune to pressure — fast-growing athleisure brand Lululemon, which recently moved into footwear, has fallen from favour. For shoppers already facing high prices amid a cost-of-living squeeze, there’s further bad news, with Puma boss Arne Freundt warning this week of higher freight costs hitting its income — which could find its way on to shelf prices. The overseas experience likely translates to a mixed bag for Accent Group, the nation’s largest footwear retailer that owns The Athlete’s Foot — which stocks all the major brands — as well as Hoka, and is the exclusive Australian distributor of On. The sneaker market is big business, with Australia’s market size assessed by Statista at $1b, and annual growth of 5.6 per cent expected until 2028. “Australia’s sneaker market has seen a surge in demand for sustainable and ethically made sneakers, reflecting a growing concern for the environment and human rights,” Statista noted. On itself is capitalising on the Olympic fervour, more than tripling the number of athletes wearing its clothes to 66. Its sneakers in particular are highly favoured by runners because of innovations including lace-free and seamless upper shoes, which also make its sneakers lighter than rivals’. In addition, celebrity endorsements, including with Hollywood star Zendaya, and sightings, such as Jennifer Lopez, are boosting its credentials. On bosses recently said apparel was just 4 per cent of their business and they were aiming to move that to 10 per cent as the company looked to attract consumers outside high-performance sports. Accent will report its performance to the market later this month, and analysts expect sales over the past couple of months to continue a strong showing that started in May. The impact of the Olympics is also likely to be an area of focus — and whether the company’s stores have been able to capitalise. Bucking the trend globally is Adidas which, despite billion-dollar stumbles with an ill-fated collaboration with Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, lifted expectations for profit, while Australia’s official Olympic outfitter, Asics, has also impressed with stronger results than its bigger rivals. All of this is troubling for Puma, and particularly Nike, which boasts among its celebrity roster tennis legend Serena Williams, and soccer pro Cristiano Ronaldo. It also kitted out the US Olympic team for Paris. The 60-year-old company is facing increasing calls for its chief executive, John Donahoe, to step down. Nike has plunged on the back of lower profit expectations, with stock watchers saying the news threatens its formerly infallible credibility. Sales in the three months to June 30 were expected to fall 10 per cent, capping off a horror year in which they had their slowest growth in 14 years, apart from during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nike isn’t expected to improve, forcing its shares to their worst performance in a single day since 1980, while its strategy of cutting ties with major retailers in favour of its own stores and online ordering appears to have backfired. Poorly received new styles — launched to replace ageing lines like Air Jordan — have not helped, and the lack of innovation has cruelled its chances of competing with On and other upstarts — including Lululemon, which kicked into footwear about two years ago, citing four years worth of research. Despite this, and consumers’ generally positive feelings for the $42.8b company, Lululemon has also struggled — pulling a new line of leggings deemed unflattering, causing analysts to downgrade the company and forcing its share price lower. Despite Lululemon’s stumbles, some still see it as able to eat Nike’s lunch as it faces criticism for not leaning into the pandemic-era growth in running, its key market. “We think really where the share can come from is from the bigger players,” BTIG analyst Janine Stichter told CNBC last month. “You have Nike who we know is struggling, has been struggling for a long time, and it seems like right now they’re focused on fixing their footwear than anything else. “It’s those bigger companies where they (Lululemon) can take share from, even if you have smaller upstarts . . . starting to nibble at the edges of growth.”
