Product recall: Basco BFO-15671 oil filter pulled from shelves over risk of death or serious injury

Aussies driving diesel cars have been urged to check the oil filter after a nationwide recall was issued for a popular part sold at a retail giant.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a recall for Basco BFO-15671 oil filters due to “a risk of death, serious injury, or property damage from an accident”.

The consumer watchdog said the base seal of the filter may prevent the thread from screwing on properly and can cause the filter to come loose when the vehicle is being driven.

“The oil spill from the engine may cause a fire if it comes into contact with the hot engine parts. An incident causing oil loss to a vehicle has occurred,” an ACCC spokesperson said.

The Basco filter is sold as both a standalone part and as part of a service kit.

The recalled products have been on Bunnings shelves across Australia between July 15 and August 13.

Allied Auto Online and Basco’s Online also sold the filter.

The filter is used in a variety of utes and SUVs sold by Izuzu and Mazda, including:

• Isuzu D-Max (TFR/TFS series, 06/2012-2026)
• Isuzu MU-X (UCS85, 11/2013-06/2021)
• Isuzu MU-X (UCR40/UCS40, 07/2021-2026)
• Mazda BT50 (B30 TFR40/TFS40, 08/2020-2026) with 3.0L diesel 4JJ1-TCX or 4JJ3-TCX engines

Australians with this part installed in their vehicle have been urged to stop driving “immediately”.

Under the recall, Basco will cover reasonable costs to have the affected vehicles inspected and their oil filters replaced.

Those who have yet to install the filter have been urged to bring the product back to their local store for a full refund.
