Pianists Adam Pinto and Emily Green-Armytage, aka Duo 2.10, bring Hallelujah Junction to Callaway Auditorium

Fluid themes and agile phrasing launched Duo 2.10’s double-piano matinee, Hallelujah Junction, at UWA’s Callaway Auditorium on Saturday. Pianists Adam Pinto and Emily Green-Armytage gelled instantly for Meredith Monk’s Ellis Island, a film score evoking trans-Atlantic migration; drawing a cognoscenti crowd into the cool ambience of ocean waves and soothing breezes — balm on a warm summer’s day. In Parallel, a world premiere from WA-born Olivia Davies, combined form and content in two pianos playing the same material, albeit offset in timing and sequence. Water was again a leitmotif in this latest work from the former WA Symphony Orchestra composer-in-residence, now Melbourne-based. Urgent tolling of one then two notes set a mesmeric mood, spilling from one keyboard to the other to spread in rivulets across the soundscape. Cascades followed as each artist stepped up energy and expression with deft and delicate timing. “Moments of unison offer clarity and a point of connection,” Davies wrote in program notes, yet the charm was in the dynamic of two voices so close and yet so far; a tyranny of dissonance, perhaps. Rumbling bass then darkened the timbre, echoing across the Fazioli and Bosendorfer instruments to coalesce at the close. Duncan Gardiner’s Idyll — Suite for two Pianos, another WA original, offered musical sketches themed on four poetic vignettes. “Butterfly” drew a parallel between “the endless flapping of wings and striking of keys”, with close symmetry sustaining a “beauty so satisfying that it’s all worthwhile”, to quote Gardiner’s verse. Bell chimes offset between the pianos summoned a vision of “huge caverns dripping with dew and salt” for the second stanza, “Ballerina”. Relaxed and lyrical, a gentle canon wended its way through a journey “never over, only ever begun” towards an irresolute cadence. Boisterous rhythm and florid melody then summoned vivid vistas of a garden filled with bucolic “merriment” for the third scene, “Fairy”; carefree to the last chord before denser scoring led in the finale, “Flutterby”, a reprise of the opening motif. “Bathe me in beauty and wonder and sound,” Gardiner wrote, as the two pianos intoned an aspirational ending. Finally, John Adams’ titular Hallelujah Junction returned to the US, this time to the west and a truck stop on the Nevada-California border. Taking a rhythmic clue from the biblical “Hallelujah”, Adam’s self-described “great title looking for a piece” burst into celebration as Green-Armytage’s energetic lead drew Pinto into conversation; eccentric, pulsating lines chasing around the keyboards with vigorous grace. Jazz riffs added colour and contrast to a rumbustious mix, by turns dark and jarring. Generous flurries followed as each artist stroked the keys with Romantic fervour, giving full voice to two powerful instruments. Raucous offbeats then reasserted Adams’ freewheeling vision, redolent of constant locomotion with hints of Broadway, before boiling over to finish.
