New State Government strategy seeks to triple WA’s craft beer production in 10 years

WA will aim to triple its production of craft beer within a decade as part of a bold government strategy that includes linking the State’s brews to our tourism brand. As part of the first-ever WA Craft Beer strategy, aptly being launched on a Friday, the State Government will aim to capitalise on the State’s unique “paddock to pint” experience, support local supply chains and grow jobs. The key goal under the roadmap will be to triple the value and volume of craft beer produced in WA by 2034. The Government will link WA beers into the State and National tourism branding, offering WA as a destination for premium food and beverages. The strategy also outlines the need for a single craft beer industry group and a dedicated marketing plan for WA’s craft beer scene. WA holds the title as the birthplace of Australia’s modern craft beer scene with the opening of Matilda Bay Brewing Company in the 80s — the first new brewery in the country since WWII. Since then, the explosion of brewing across the State has seen WA’s 120 breweries come to represent a fifth of the national market. Brewing contributed an estimated $648 million to WA’s economy in 2020-21, directly supporting almost 1000 full-time jobs. Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis, who will launch the strategy in Broome said WA was the craft beer capital of Australia. “We want to help the local industry continue to ‘out brew’ eastern states competitors and even quench the thirst of global markets,” she said “Our craft beer industry uses premium ingredients grown in the State’s agricultural sector and it’s that unique WA ‘paddock to pint’ experience that an increasing number of customers are drawn to.” WA Brewers Association chairman Michael Morgan said the target was deliberately set to be a “stretch goal”. “We’ve set ourselves a challenge there so — it’s not impossible,” he said. Reece Wheadon, founder of Nowhereman Brewing, which merged with fellow West Australian brand Otherside last year said the tripling target was achievable, and the reclaiming of the State’s ownership of craft beer was important. “From a tourism perspective, craft beer can hold its own in terms of activities for people to do once they’re here and an additional drawcard,” he said. “You know, we started out almost value-adding to wine regions, and we’re now equal with those wine regions.” The strategy comes at a critical time for many brewers, with the beer excise rising on Thursday, amid calls from industry associations for the Federal Government to freeze or lower the “hidden tax”. Brewers Association of Australia chief executive John Preston said beer drinkers were being slammed by another excise tax increase during the cost of living crisis. “This tax has gone up twice a year for over 30 years. We’ve now got the third-highest beer tax in the world,” he said. “Enough is enough. We’re calling for the Federal Government to step in and cut the rate of tax for beers served in hospitality venues back to a sensible level.” It also comes after a period of market changes, including the return to local ownership of iconic WA brand Feral Brewing, as part of a deal with Nail Brewing and popular South West brand Beerfarm in May.
