The long-awaited electric Toyota HiLux is coming.

Reuters reports word from Toyota Thailand president Noriaki Yamashita that the Japanese brand will start producing HiLux EVs before the end of 2025.

This follows shortly after Isuzu’s announcement it would introduce an electric D-Max in 2025.

Before mass production begins, Toyota will reportedly deliver a dozen battery-powered HiLux utes to the tourist town of Pattaya, Thailand to trial them as public transportation.

Yamashita-san didn’t provide any further information on the production model, such as whether it’ll be available as a dual-cab ute or if it’ll be a single-cab like the HiLux Revo BEV Concept.

Toyota built a single example of this concept, first revealed in December 2022 in Thailand, which has previously visited Australia for internal review and to be driven by media.

Based on the current-generation HiLux, this concept is a single-cab, long-tub 4×2 ute with an electric motor on the rear axle.

Toyota didn’t reveal outputs for the electric motor or the size of the battery, but said range is “around 200 kilometres”.

Though Toyota has yet to build an electric HiLux, companies like ROEV have filled this gap with electric conversions of it.

Toyota isn’t just looking to electric power. As part of its multi-solution strategy, Toyota has revealed a hydrogen fuel-cell version of its HiLux.

It recently introduced an updated HiLux in Australia with a 48V mild-hybrid version of the familiar 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine.

The current HiLux isn’t available with a hybrid powertrain, but its distant North American cousin – the Tacoma – was recently redesigned, moving to the TNGA-F platform and gaining the option of a hybrid.
