With the warmer weather around the corner, it won’t be long until the swimming pool and backyard become the family favourite, so it’s time to get the outdoor area summer ready.

After receiving a battering over the last few months from the wind and rain, there’s no doubt many outdoor areas are looking weathered.

For those who have been a bit lax over the winter period, Poolwerx Founder and CEO John O’Brien said getting a water test was a great way to begin rehabilitating the pool.

A simple test and some expert advice can reveal in-depth analysis of the exact chemical dosages your swimming pool requires to recapture its glimmer.

“Collect a sample of water from about an arm’s length under the surface and aim to have the water tested within a few hours,” Mr O’Brien said. “Even if your pool water is clear, it doesn’t mean it is healthy.”

Having a correctly balanced pool will make life easier for your equipment and reduce wear and tear on the pool itself.

Mr O’Brien encouraged people to properly clean the pool filter, skimmer and other equipment.

“To loosen dirt and remove algae, brush down your pool walls with a pool brush and vacuum the area,” he said.

For those who have a robotic cleaner, Mr O’Brien recommended removing larger debris by hand to mitigate any potential damage to it.

Mr O’Brien advised pool owners to start working the pool pump operation time back up to 12 hours per day, and to check the pump once a week to make sure it’s working effectively.

To lessen the risk of running your pump dry or, worse, burning it out, make sure your pool is always full. Installing a pool blanket will reduce water evaporation, chemical usage and the amount of debris that falls into the pool.

Beyond the pool, Mr O’Brien suggested people check their pool fence and lock to ensure it was in good working order and remove any climbable objects.

Make sure your swimming pool area has a current CPR sign displayed, as well as a first aid kit and plenty of sunscreen.

“As the warmer weather fast approaches, now is the time to give your pool a pre-summer makeover,” Mr O’Brien said.
