Emergency service members set to brave icy Albany water for annual polar plunge supporting Special Olympics

Shrieks, laughter and plenty of goosebumps will fill Middleton Beach as locals take an icy leap into the Southern Ocean for the annual Polar Plunge. About 30 Albany police and other local emergency service members will jump off Middleton Beach jetty in uniform and colourful clothes on Sunday, July 19 at 10am. More than just an icy dip, the Polar Plunge is an emergency services fundraiser for the Special Olympics Australia. Every dollar raised helps provide athletes with intellectual disabilities and autism to access coaching, equipment and competition pathways. Through year-round training, competitions and community programs, Special Olympics Australia creates opportunities for athletes to build confidence, friendships, independence and pride. WA Police detective Lizzy Alderson said the Polar Plunge was a great opportunity for emergency services to connect with the community while raising money for a vital cause. “In Albany it’s very, very cold water so it’s always a good challenge each year and it’s a really good way for the station to give back to the community for a really good cause,” she said. “We usually get 30 plungers each year and then a few hundred people come to support and watch us all jump off the jetty. Ms Alderson said the event continued to bring together emergency service groups, with the Special Olympics cause being one many hold close to their hearts. “This year, there’s groups from our district office, other police officers, the fire department and we encourage them to dress up and then jump in teams off the jetty,” she said. “There’s always been a really strong connection between law enforcement and the Special Olympics.” Ms Alderson said she encouraged community members to get involved and take part in the icy challenge. “We are encouraging people to come down on the day, to sign up and join a team and participate,” she said. “There’s a $30 registration fee and that includes a Polar Plunge t-shirt and a cooked breakfast after the plunge as well.” People interested in taking part can register online ahead of the even or sign up on the day.
