GSFL 2024: A taxing finals run was Royals’ undoing in tough grand final loss, says coach Darrell Panizza

Deflated Royals coach Darrell Panizza believed a taxing finals campaign was ultimately his side’s undoing, after going down to arch rivals Albany in the Great Southern Football League decider on Saturday. The undermanned Lions were battered and bruised heading into the match, missing man mountain Brock Higgins and on-baller Michael McGlade with hamstring injuries and lockdown defender Quinn Bird (shoulder) who all went down in the finals. However, the Lions were brave in the 8.5 (53) to 10.14 (74) defeat and even gave the Sharks an enormous scare late in the third despite losing ruckman Stephen Beal to a concussion early in the quarter. Panizza said his injury-plagued side gave absolutely everything but just weren’t able to match the strength of the now dual premiers. “We’ve had a bit of damage over the last, three weeks with players and things like that,” he said. “We were brave and I said the whole year what we’ve done and how we’ve gone about it all came down to that one last quarter, and we weren’t good enough. “So from my perspective, I couldn’t have asked for any more from them because there was no more to give and congratulations to the Sharks. “They are certainly now the team in the competition that everybody will hunt.” Panizza, who returned to the Lions’ den this season for the first time since winning the club eight flags from 12 grand final appearances between 1999-2014, said the Sharks senior players were the difference makers. “I think both coaches got as much out of their side that they couldn’t. It just shows you that a bit of class probably shone through at the end,” Panizza said. “Isaac Baum and Bailey Taylor and those types of players were just a little bit better than what we had and cream always rises to the surface. “We had three players coming off knee reconstructions and major injuries that meant they hadn’t played for a year so it’ll just make it better for them when they come back next year.” Despite the disappointing loss, Panizza remained optimistic about what the future holds for his side. “We’re only a very young side, we’re probably not going to lose too many out of today’s game and it’ll be up to the senior players whether or not they want to come back and have another go,” he said. “So we’re probably sitting in a pretty good place.” Reflecting on the season, Panizza insisted it was a successful season from a club perspective with three sides making grand finals. “We’ve had a great season, we had three teams in the grand final as a football club,” he said. “All grades ended up in the finals, we won two, we lost the one that everybody remembers, but we’ve done a really good job as a football club. “This year, our culture’s been about each other, and we’re trying to build a club that never gives in. “And that’s been my rhetoric to this football club since the day I started playing here. “We’re not a bad club, we’re just a club that loves to win.”
