Albany Rowing Club welcomed competitors and visitors to the region at the weekend as it hosted its Masters Regatta on the Kalgan River.
The biannual event has continued to grow over the years with competitor numbers jumping from about 90 in the last regatta in 2024 to 154 this year, highlighting the event’s rising appeal among rowing clubs across WA.
Albany Rowing Club president Laura Bird said the regatta had become a favourite on the masters rowing calendar, with many clubs choosing to make a weekend of the trip to the Great Southern.
“Most of the clubs come down for the whole long weekend which is why we host it,” she said.
“This year we’ve got nine different clubs which is great.
“Most of them have travelled from parts of Perth and Bunbury.”

Bird said teams love coming to the Albany regatta as they enjoy a more relaxed competition and the opportunity to compete in the scenic setting of the Lower Kalgan.
“Perth clubs love coming down as its very relaxed and most people end up with a medal,” she said.
She also praised the behind-the-scenes effort that made the regatta possible, crediting the club’s volunteers to it being such a successful weekend.
“We’ve got a strong committee and they all just pulled together for this which is awesome,” she said.
