Sunshine, sea breeze and a strong sense of community drew large crowds to the Binalup/Middleton Beach Festival on Monday, as people gathered for a day of markets, music and to celebrate local citizens.

The citizen of the year awards were announced at 9am, recognising individuals and groups who have dedicated time to supporting the Albany community.

Carol Pettersen took out the Annette Knight Community Leadership Medal, while Guiseppe (Joe) Lembo won the title of Albany citizen of the year.

Dorothy Field was awarded senior citizen of the year, Peter Findlay was named youth citizen of the year and Brian and Carol Appleby — organisers of the Community Bank All Abilities Ball — won the active citizenship community group or event award.

Major of Albany Greg Stocks said the awards highlighted the amazing people who shape the local community.

“These recipients reflect the very best of Albany — people who lead with compassion, give their time freely and work tirelessly to make our community stronger, more inclusive and more connected,” he said.

Festivities continued throughout the day with free activities alongside the food stalls that became a popular destination as lunchtime approached.

Local artists also took to the stage, sharing live music and performances with the community over the afternoon.
