We all know that the Water Corporation has been advocating that Albany needs a desalination plant somewhere close to the city.
It so happens every location they have chosen has been rejected for a number of reasons.
They have chosen Nanarup Beach as the proposed location for this desal plant.
The only reason I can see why they chose this site is that it is the easiest option.
Suck it up, take out what we need, then pump the toxic brine back into the ocean.
Out of sight, out of mind, you don’t give a damn.
There has never been a public forum or a workshop for locals to debate other options and to have them put forward to compare these concepts to the cost, economically, socially, environmentally and culturally against Water Corp’s proposal for Nanarup Beach.
If our proposals show there will be no damage whatsoever to the environment and still delivers fresh water to Albany, Mt Barker and Denmark, why wouldn’t you push for the safer and cheaper option?
If Nanarup becomes the Government’s choice there is every chance the desal plant will cause a number of issues.
The site becomes zoned industrial, there’s a reduction in land values, wilderness status is lost.
High tension power lines, pipes crossing properties, two rivers and bridges and 30km of pipeline to town.
Breeding grounds for southern right whales, ignoring the dreamtime connection to the southern rights.
The Government ministers and Water Corp will not guarantee nothing will go wrong with their proposal.
If a desal or recycling plant for all grey water is built behind the CSBP fertiliser plant, there will be no concerns for Nanarup Beach.
