
A gas flare that treats emissions generated by the decomposition of organic waste has been installed at Hanrahan Road waste facility as the City of Albany begins capping sections to prepare for its eventual closure.
The system, installed and operated by LMS Energy, uses a network of underground wells and pipes to collect methane gas that is generated from decomposing waste and directs it to the flare.
The greenhouse gas is siphoned from the trapped areas into the chamber of the flare where it is treated via a small flame to be converted into the much safer elements of carbon dioxide and water vapour.
Operations manager Damon Lawrence said the flare was necessary to ensure that gas didn’t become trapped under the surface as the city capped sections of the landfill to prepare for its upcoming closure deadline in about five years.
“The installation of this landfill gas flare is an important step in ensuring the Hanrahan Road landfill is managed safely and sustainably as we move towards its closure in 2032,” he said.
“Rather than allowing methane to escape into the atmosphere, this system captures and treats the gas in a controlled manner, reducing emissions and protecting the environment.

“This investment reflects the city’s commitment to responsible waste management and to delivering long-term environmental outcomes for our community.”
LMS Energy is a leading methane abatement specialist which manages bioenergy and emissions solutions at almost 70 sites across the country.
The flare, which is visible from Hanrahan Road and within the tip site but is enclosed and safe is now active following final approvals, connections and testing.
Further updates on the closure of the Hanrahan Road site, including information about future waste management will be released by the city.
