Anthony Albanese urges teens to read a book, learn an instrument ahead of social media ban

Anthony Albanese has urged Australian children to “learn a new instrument” or read a book hours before the landmark social media ban takes effect.
From December 10, children under 16 will be locked out of popular social media profiles, including Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and Reddit.
In a video message, Mr Albanese told children on Tuesday they “know better than anyone” the pressure of “growing up with algorithms”.
“Above all, make the most of the school holidays coming up, rather than spending it scrolling on your phone,” he said.
“Start a new sport, learn a new instrument, or read that book that has been sitting there on your shelf for some time.
“Importantly, spend quality time with your friends and your family face-to-face.”
Mr Albanese said the ban was to “support” children, and urged them to reach out to friends, family, Headspace, or Kids Helpline if they needed support or had questions.

It comes after Reddit agreed to comply with the ban, having argued to the eSafety Commissioner that it was a source of information, not primarily social media.
In a post, the site voiced objection to the ban.
“By limiting account eligibility and putting identity tests on internet usage, this law undermines everyone’s right to both free expression and privacy, as well as account-specific protections,” they said.
“We also believe the law’s application to Reddit (a pseudonymous, text-based forum overwhelmingly used by adults) is arbitrary, legally erroneous, and goes far beyond the original intent of the Australian parliament, especially when other obvious platforms are exempt.”
The federal government, meanwhile, is heralding the ban – a world-first measure.
Landmarks are expected to be lit up green and gold on Wednesday to celebrate the first day of the ban.
