Exhibition quite a feat for Bunbury foot painter

Roslyn Burns has spent the past 10 years honing her skills in creating a special type of art and is celebrating the occasion with a solo exhibition this week.

The Bunbury artist, pictured, has never let being wheelchair bound hold her back and while paintbrushes are not a part of her artistic toolkit, it’s Ms Burns’ feet and toes that bring the work to life.

Ms Burns began producing art in 2011 when she joined the Art Partners program at the Stirling Street Arts Centre and has since gone on to create pieces that have won several awards and been highly commended, including the As We Are Aurenda Art Award in 2013 and Activ’s Christmas card design competition in 2012.

Artistic mentors Bee Denham and Charlotte White said Ms Burns had been working hard on her new collection of paintings.

“We help Ros with the process, but she’s usually the boss when it comes to the colours and creative vision,” Ms White said.

“We work in layers; there’s lots of techniques.”

There’s no pressure, it’s just about having loads of fun.

Ms Burns said she enjoyed painting because it was a fun way to keep busy and she was excited about her upcoming exhibition.

“Bee and Charlotte do a good job helping me,” she said.

Her current body of work, Pride of Foot, celebrates Ms Burns’ fierce determination to express herself through her art and will be on show at Stirling Street Arts Centre on Friday at the afternoon tea opening at 2pm.

The pieces are a mixed bag of landscapes, animals and more — all of which show off Ms Burns’ unique artistic style and bright, colourful personality.
