The Busselton Margaret River Cricket Association returned from its Christmas break with the first round of its shortest format.

The T20 competition is run either side of next week’s country week competition, with the four clubs playing each other twice before February’s grand final.

Sitting third after seven games in the 50-over competition, St Mary’s were the surprise packet from the first day of games, toppling YOBS and Margaret River to sit atop the table.

An impressive bowling performance, led by Danny Hatton and Ben Crain, who both picked up two wickets, meant they needed just 95 runs for an upset victory over a strong YOBS side to start the day.

It was Hatton starring again in the second game, but this time at the top of the order with the bat, anchoring the innings with 59 from 55 balls as the Saints set Margaret River 122 to win.

Without champion all-rounder Kaween De Silva, Margaret River fell short in the chase, finishing on 7-107 from their 20 overs.

Another loss earlier in the day meant the Hawks are at the bottom after the first weekend of the tournament.

The closest game of the day was YOBS’ win over Dunsborough in the afternoon.

Led by a 35-run contribution from Payne, YOBS chased down Dunsborough’s 127 with five balls and just one wicket remaining, despite the best efforts of Billy McGowan, who picked up 4-13 from his four overs.

The tournament resumes tonight, with Margaret River hosting St Mary’s at Gloucester Park and Dunsborough hosting YOBS.
