A man has been charged following a terrifying armed robbery in which he brandished a knife at staff at a Maddington bakery.

The incident took place at the Jesters drive-thru on Attfield Street just before 8am on Saturday.

Police allege a man approached the window of the popular pie store brandishing a knife and demanded cash from the staff member.

He then allegedly fled the scene with the shop till.

Detectives from the Rapid Apprehension Squad were called and quickly apprehended the man a short time later and recovered the shop till.

A WA Police spokeswoman said a 39-year-old man from Kalgoorlie has been charged with one count of criminal damage or destruction of property and one count of armed Robbery.

He is due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court on Sunday.
