Peter Taylor: Suspended Perth dentist to face trial next year after regulatory body takes unprecedented step

A suspended Perth dentist accused of continuing to work while unregistered will face a two-day trial on three criminal charges next year. Kalamunda-based Peter Taylor, also known as Peter Terzi, has been charged with two counts of knowingly or recklessly claiming to be a registered dentist and one count of carrying out a restricted dental act. The 35-year-old has pleaded not guilty to the offences, which were allegedly committed on March 9 and 11 last year. On Tuesday, he was represented by barrister Milan Bevk in Perth Magistrates Court for a trial allocation hearing and not required to appear in person. Mr Bevk and the prosecutor were unable to land on two days this year when they were both free, so there will be a further trial allocation hearing on October 6. Mr Bevk told reporters outside court the trial would likely be held next year. While the allegations are yet to be tested in court, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency named Mr Taylor on Monday in its first ever public safety warning about a suspended practitioner. AHPRA chief executive Justin Untersteiner said the power to issue such a warning came into force two years ago. Mr Taylor received his Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of WA in 2018 and his Bachelor of Nursing from Monash University in 2010, but has been suspended from practising in both fields since February 26 this year. A Roleystone patient of Mr Taylor’s, who did not want her name published, said she received a message on an app saying he could not complete her Invisalign treatment. She alleged that mid-way through the treatment — when she was unaware that he was suspended — he told her to pay the remainder of his fees, totalling $4500. She said she did it, even though she thought it “was a little bit weird”. “I got that message in the app and I tried to call. No-one answered,” she said. “I’m just wearing the same tray I was already in because you can’t just keep moving it - you can lose your teeth. “No other dentists really want to do anything about it, because I’m halfway through. “Now I’m just stuck . . . he removed a tooth to do it and I have things glued on my teeth so I basically have nowhere to go from here. “I was just a little bit annoyed that I wasn’t informed as a patient that he was suspended, or he first got suspended but was still allowed to see patients but with restrictions . . . I feel like we should have been told.” The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency is urging anyone who may have received treatment from, or employed Peter Terzi/Taylor, or who has information that he has claimed to be a dentist or a nurse since 26 February 2025, to contact AHPRA on 07 3149 4771 or at criminal.offences@ahpra.gov.au
