The three men convicted of murdering Perth brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend Jack Carter Rhoad have been sentenced to 158 years and nine months jail each.

Jesús Gerardo, known as “El Kekas”, Irineo Francisco and Ángel Jesús were previously convicted of aggravated homicide and related offences by a judge in the Mexican city of Ensenada last week.

The judge ruled the three Mexican men acted with premeditation when they shot dead the trio near the coastal city of Ensenada on April 27, 2024.

The brothers and their friend were travelling though Mexico’s Baja California region on a surfing trip when they were killed during an ordeal prosecutors described as a ‘robbery gone wrong’.

The victim’s bodies were found dumped in a well days later after they were reported missing.

In a joint-statement shared on Saturday, the brothers’ parents, Debra and Martin Robinson, said “justice has been served”.

“No sentence, no matter how long, will ever bring our beautiful boys back or undo the devastating loss suffered by their family and friends,” they said.

“The pain of losing Callum and Jake will stay with us forever.

“However, we take some comfort in knowing that these men will be removed from society and will never have the opportunity to inflict this kind of unimaginable pain and suffering on other families.

“While nothing can change what happened, we hope this outcome allows us to take a small step forward, knowing that justice has been served.

The parents travelled to Ensenada for the judge-only murder trial. They were initially seated metres away from the accused killers of Jake, 31, Callum, 32 and Rhoad, 30.

Before the guilty verdicts were delivered by the judge last week, Ms Robinson requested they face a maximum sentence. The parents reportedly tuned in to the sentencing hearing remotely from Australia.

The Baja California State Attorney General’s Office, in a statement, said the men were sentenced to 135 years for the charge of aggravated homicide, 13 years for violent vehicle theft and 10 years and 9 months for aggravated robbery.

The ABC reports the killers’ defence team indicated their intention to appeal the sentence, which was delivered on Friday local time.

The defence team previously tried to argue prosecutors did not have enough evidence to prove the case.

WA Premier Roger Cook on Saturday extended his thoughts to the Robinson family after the sentence was delivered.

“All Western Australians have been thinking of Debra and Martin Robinson and their family during this distressing and trying time,” he said.

“We are all grateful that justice has been served after the Robinson’s brave decision to travel to Mexico for the trial and sit in the court room.

“No sentence could bring back Jake and Callum but hopefully the decision gives the family the closure they need from their tragic murders.”

Leader of the Opposition Angus Taylor, who was in Perth on Saturday, said the sentence imposed was “appropriate”.

“My heart goes out to the Robinson family,” he said.

“My heart goes out to the Robinson family. While the sentence handed down in Mexico today for these sickening murders is appropriate, nothing can bring Jake and Callum back.

“All Australians are feeling for the Robinson family today. We join with them in their grief and remember the lives of their boys today.”

Page Rhoad, the mother of the murdered American, reportedly addressed the court thanking the judge during the sentencing hearing.

“There will never be justice for the loss of a child, but these men will never hurt anyone else again,” she said, according to AAP.

Mr Robinson last week said the guilty verdicts were a “significant moment in our long and painful journey to seek justice for our beautiful sons Callum and Jake, and their friend Carter Rhoad”.

“While no verdict can ever bring back our boys, or ease the heartbreak of losing them, we hope this outcome represents an important step towards justice and accountability,” he said.

“Callum and Jake had their whole lives ahead of them, filled with dreams, love and promise. We will forever carry their memory in our hearts … They will never be forgotten.”

A Mexican judge has already jailed a young woman, Ari Gisell, for 20 years after she instigated a violent robbery against the men over their car tyres, which allegedly led to their murders.

A friend and colleague of Mr Carter and Callum told the trial that he was on the same surfing trip before returning home early for work. He said he had texted both men on April 28 before becoming concerned.

The men were also due to check into an Airbnb, which the friend contacted only to discover they had not arrived.

A private search party, consisting of their friends, found what appeared to be their burnt-out campsite and a mug belonging to Callum. Blood and a bullet shell casing were also discovered.

Mexican police later declared it a crime scene, days before the men’s bodies were found after the Federal Bureau of Investigation assisted in the search.

The burnt-out vehicle belonging to the men was found on a ranch with its tyres missing. Their campsite was also torched.

All three men were found down a well, alongside the body of a local farmer, whose death is not being treated as linked.

The Callum and Jake Robinson Foundation was launched by their grieving parents and has since made an impact internationally.

In its first year, the foundation provided three grants to support diabetic athletics, in honour of Callum who had type 1 diabetes, promote lacrosse across the world and improve beach and coastal ecosystems.

Callum, known as the “Big Koala,” was living in the US playing professional lacrosse at the time of his death.

The inaugural Jake Robinson scholarship, presented by Martin and Debra, was awarded to two first year medical students at the University of Notre Dame in May.

Jake graduated from the same University in 2019 as a doctor. After helping others at Fiona Stanley Hospital, Bunbury Hospital and interstate, Jake was due to take up work at Geelong hospital upon his return to Australia.
