Person questioned after death of 11-month-old baby found on grounds of Kingsway Christian College in Darch

A person is being questioned by police over the death of a baby on the grounds of a private school in Perth’s northern suburbs on Wednesday night.

St John Ambulance paramedics were called to Kingsway Christian College in Darch after the horrifying find of the 11-month-old’s body about 5.45pm.

Forensics officers focused on a classroom and a white van, which was examined and towed from the scene about midnight.

A police spokesperson confirmed detectives from the Major Crime Squad were investigating the death. It is not yet known whether the baby’s death is suspicious.

The school is closed for the holidays until next week but an after-hours childcare facility was still running from a demountable classroom.

A nearby resident said she had seen children being picked up from the school sometime before the discovery.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said he was an ambulance drive past his home but had no idea it was heading to the school.

“We never thought it was a child,” he said

“What can I say, it’s really sad.”

Police and detectives were at the scene for most of the night but packed up the crime scene late last night and have not returned this morning.

Neighbours who heard police and ambulance sirens last night were alarmed to learn of the discovery.

It is unclear whether the school holiday facility will be running today.
