Maddington residents warned to shelter indoors, avoid toxic smoke from hazardous fire
Maddington residents are being warned to stay inside their homes to avoid hazardous fumes after a fire at a lithium battery recycling facility began releasing toxic plumes of smoke.
Emergency services rushed to the industrial premises after potentially dangerous smoke was reported billowing from the building, near the intersection of Albany Highway and Burwash Place, around 1.40pm.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued a Hazmat emergency warning to residents in the area bounded by Dalziell Street, Morley Street, Aldington Street, Miller Street and Albany Highway.
“There is a direct threat to the community,” the DFES warning said.
“There is a fire in a recycling facility resulting in potentially dangerous smoke blowing in an easterly direction.

“As a precautionary measure, people in the area should remain inside, out of the smoke or fumes, with doors and windows closed.
“Air conditioners should also be switched off.
“People should stay away from the area. If you are already in the area take advice from emergency services personnel.
“People with medical concerns should contact their local doctor or call Health Direct.”

The facility where the blaze broke out, Li-ion Energy, recycles and reconditions lithium-batteries.
Firefighters battling the blaze were the first to spot the fire, which was near their Maddington base.
St John WA said one man in his 40s had been taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital for smoke inhalation, while another man was treated at the scene.

Police are also on site. Motorists have been asked to avoid the area.
Albany Highway is closed between River Avenue and Stokely Creek Crossing and The Crescent is closed between Morley Street and Albany Highway.
