A 23-year-old man has been rushed to hospital after he was punched in the head outside Paramount Nightclub.

Police and paramedics were called to reports of the assault near the James Street venue in Northbridge about 1.45am today.

One man suffered head injuries and was treated at the scene before being taken to Royal Perth Hospital by St John Ambulance.

He remains in a serious but stable condition in the trauma unit.

An 18-year-old man from Girrawheen, who witnesses saw being led away from the scene by police officers this morning, has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.

A police spokesperson said he would be appearing in Perth Magistrates Court “at a later date” and that anyonewho may have seen the altercation, or anyone with information about it, should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online.

The incident comes six months after Paramount nightclub manager Giuseppe “Peppe” Raco died after fell victim to a one-punch attack along the same popular entertainment strip.

Jaylen Denny Dimer, 26, was initially charged with grievous bodily harm over the July 4 one-punch attack on the married father, however the charge was upgraded to unlawful assault causing death — also known as the “one-punch law” which carries a 20-year maximum — in August just weeks after Mr Raco died in hospital.

His charge was then further upgraded to manslaughter, which carries a maximum life sentence, in December last year.

Dimer formally pleaded guilty to killing Mr Raco in January and he was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in jail, with parole eligibility after five, in April.

Following Dimer’s sentencing Mr Raco’s devastated family hit out saying they felt the term was not long enough and questioned if WA’s justice system was fair.

Then, in an appeal notice that was filed in May, the Director of Public Prosecutions revealed it had launched an appeal against the sentence, arguing it was inadequate for such a serious offence and that Supreme Court Justice Stephen Hall had erred in law by failing to take into account the serious nature and circumstances of the offence, namely that it was an “unprovoked alcohol-fuelled assault” that took place in a public place against a stranger.

Mr Raco had just stepped out for a break during the early hours of July 5 last year when he tried to stop a fight inside a fast food outlet. As he intervened a heavily intoxicated Dimer struck him in the back of his head.

The force of the blow left Mr Raco dazed but did not cause him to fall. Instead, he stumbled 20m outside before sitting down against a nearby wall and losing consciousness. Mr Raco suffered an acquired brain injury and remained on life support in an induced coma for two days before his family made the heartbreaking decision to switch it off.

The 40-year-old Paramount Nightclub manager spent two days on life support in an induced coma before losing his fight for life.
