A 25-year-old Beckenham man is lucky to be alive after a horror crash split his car in two.

It happened on Welshpool Road near Station Street in East Cannington at about 10.30pm last night.

Police say the car hit a traffic island, lost control and crashed into two trees.

The force of the crash was so hard, one of the trees was uprooted and the car split in two.

The driver, who was trapped in the driver’s seat, had to be cut free from the wreckage.

Sharon, who heard the crash from her home, tried to keep the man calm while they waited for emergency services to arrive.

“I heard an almighty bang and thought it was like a bomb going off... I’ve run outside and I’ve seen the car split in half,” she said.

“I just saw him sitting there and he was covered in blood, but he was talking to me and asking me to help him out - which I said ‘no’, he had to stay in the car.”

The man suffered a broken arm and nose and was taken to Royal Perth Hospital where he is recovering.

Police are investigating if speed was a factor in the crash
