Santa Maria College in Attadale removes school tie from uniform after decades

A Perth private girls’ school is waving goodbye to one of its most recognisable uniform staples, with students set to go “tieless” from next year.

Santa Maria College has announced its traditional school tie will be retired from 2027, marking what the school has described as “the end of an era”.

In a video posted to the college’s official Instagram page, students paid tribute to the tie and its long history among generations of Santa Maria students.

“After years of loyal service,” the students said.

“Every now and then we have to say goodbye to something that has been part of our lives for a very long time.

“For years the Santa Maria tie has been there for us, it has served generations of Santa Maria students well but now the time has come for our tie to enjoy a well earned retirement.

“Santa Maria College is officially going tieless, the end of an era and the start of a new one.”

The college said the change would coincide with the introduction of a new winter blouse, designed following feedback from students.

“It’s officially time to say goodbye to the tie… and hello to our new Winter blouse,” the school said.

From 2027, the new blouse will be worn over the skirt rather than tucked in — and students will no longer need to wear a tie.

A 12-month transition period will also be introduced, meaning students can continue wearing the current blouse throughout 2027, but without the tie.

The change brings an end to the long-standing place of the Santa Maria tie as part of the school uniform, while ushering in a new look for students from next year.
