The Batavia Bowling League aims to attract more female bowlers this season by shifting ladies’ pennants to Saturday afternoons from Thursday mornings.

The Geraldton Bowling Club is the venue for the Saturday afternoon event with organiser June Olden calling for nominations ahead of the season, which starts on October 16.

Early indications are good, with solid support coming from existing players as well as first-timers keen to join up for the weekly tournament.

A Saturday afternoon season was run six years ago, with players from around the district joining the new starters for 17 ends.

Games will start at 2pm each week with the 17-end format expected to allow play to finish about 4.15pm.

In local scroungers Terry Williamson continued his great run over the past month to add Geraldton’s mixed Friday event to his list of successes.

Williamson gained the victory following a stirring final over the talented and in-form Janet Messina and Barry Chester, with just four shots separating the trio at the end of play. John Gummery and Noel Smith scored 44 points apiece in qualifying to top the listings on the day.

Gummery and Smith joined Elaine Barnetson, June Olden and Mal McKenzie but failed to move past the semifinal stage.

For a second consecutive week, maximum scores were hard to record.

Last week’s winner, Gary Cosgrove, joined McKenzie, Olden, Chester, Williamson and Smith in the group to achieve the maximum score.

The Drennan O’Malley Open pairs at Wonthella take centre stage this Sunday.

The popular one-day tournament will be the final white-out before the opening match of the men’s pennant season. With multiple sides in the competition that appear well balanced, at least on paper, the pennants season should be hotly contested.

More information on nomination for pennants is available from June Olden on 0427 271 663 or Geraldton Bowling Club on 9921 7873.
