There’s a chance for teams lower down the table to make up some points this weekend in the top divisions of Geraldton junior basketball.

The league leaders are out with a bye in both the boys’ and girls’ under-18 division one competitions, leading to some intriguing match-ups.

In the girls’ division, second-placed Olympians take on Pumas Green, who are in sixth after the first round.

In the boys’, second-placed Dongara play fourth-placed Stateside.

Either of the second-placed teams will go to the top with a win.

Jesse Priolo could be one to watch in the other boys’ under-18 div. 1 game as his Olympians side, in third spot, play fifth-placed Pumas.

Lower down the age groups, first and second play each other in the girls’ under-16 division one as Trades take on Stateside Gold.

League leaders Trades take on third-placed Hawks in the boys’ under-16s top flight, and second-placed Stateside will be hoping for a good result against Chapman Valley to capitalise and go top if Trades fumble.

Among the many junior matches in the first round of the season last weekend, Pumas Green played some entertaining basketball against Hawks in the girls’ under-10s’ division.

Association president Peter Brown said the first weekend of junior ball had gone well, with many teams on the court — 78 of them — in the under-eights to under-12s.

“We used the netball courts a little bit for some overflow and training, there were so many teams,” he said.

The junior teams were also boosted by some good news after Premier Mark McGowan announced the State Government would nearly double its funding commitment to build a bigger basketball stadium.

Chapman Valley Gold beat Hawks 41-16 in the girls’ under-18 division one last Friday, while Olympians beat Stateside 41-14.

Dongara beat Olympians 39-27 on Friday in the boys’ under-18 division one, and Chapman Valley beat Stateside 47-28.
