Five Mid West doctors praised for their dedication to rural communities with over 20 years of service

The dedication and long-term service of five doctors in the Mid West have been recognised by Rural Health West and WA Country Health Service in an awards ceremony last week. The ceremony highlighted 38 health practitioners who have reached milestones working in rural health, recognising their commitment to serving their community over several decades. WA Country Health Service chief executive Jeff Moffet congratulated the recipients on their contributions to improving the lives of rural communities. “These incredible doctors have turned up for their communities year after year, offering stability and continuity of care to the residents of some of our most rural and remote areas,” he said. “Their compassion and dedication are central to the delivery of excellent health care in the bush.” Dr Tonya Constantine, who works in Geraldton, and Dr Phillip King, who works in Meekatharra, were both rewarded for 30 years of working in rural health. Dr Constantine, originally from a farm outside of Geraldton, returned to work in the Mid West city after completing her medical degree at the University of Western Australia and stints at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital. Her dedication to accessible women’s health care has seen her travel to Three Springs and Morawa to provide women’s health services in these remote areas, and she has an interest in paediatrics, aged care and teaching. Practising in the community that her family, including five grandchildren, “proudly call home” is “deeply meaningful”. Doctors recognised for their 20-year contribution to rural health were Dr CH Khong of Geraldton, Dr Geert Dijkwel of Carnarvon and Dr Anna Stuart of Mt Magnet. The annual awards honour the Statewide contributions of rural practitioners and their commitment to the regions. This year, eight doctors reached 30 years of service and 27 doctors contributed 20 years of service. One doctor was recognised for 50 years in rural health, and two more were recognised for their 40-year commitment. Rural Health West CEO Professor Catherine Elliott said the organisation was proud to honour the commitment and contribution these practitioners have made to rural health. “Across WA there are doctors who have built deep, trusted relationships with their communities that ultimately shape better health outcomes,” she said.
