Champion Bay Senior High School Year 12 students learned a new sport recently, completing a five-week program with the Geraldton Croquet Club.

There was a three-week introduction to skills and strategy before the main event, and the series ended with a singles challenge.

The results were very close.

Jack Garland, Nathan Burn and Jemma Caudry each had five wins and two losses.

Net hoops decided the final positions. Jack was overall winner, with plus 12 net hoops, ahead of Jemma with plus 8 and Nathan with plus 5.

The other competitors were Azlina Sekodel, Chloe Woods, Mason Allen-Brown, Chloe Duffy and Savanna Clarke.

New members Doug Lee and Bob Imray won the novice award this month, recognising some early successes in the sport.

Imray won the club’s doubles championship this month, as well as the D-grade championship.

Cheri Cross won the club’s Gratte Cup, also this month.

Geraldton hosted the fifth under-21 Australian Golf Croquet Championships last year.

Local player Darcy De Vries, 14, was the division two singles winner with five wins and one loss.

Golf croquet has simpler rules than association croquet and has experienced stronger interest recently.
