Philanthropist Nicola Forrest visited Katanning this month to show support for young regional families in the COVID-19 crisis.

As part of its Statewide COVID-19 response, the Minderoo Foundation has partnered with early childhood support organisation, A Smart Start Great Southern, to deliver relief packages to vulnerable families.

A Smart Start Great Southern chairwoman Jo Webb said when playgrounds and kindergartens were closed, parents were unsure about how they could give their children the same learning opportunities at home.

“Two relief packs were put together; a health hygiene pack which supports the key COVID-19 messages of washing hands and coughing safely, plus a home activity pack to encourage learning while having fun,” she said.

Minderoo Foundation co-chair Nicola Forrest said distributing relief to isolated families during COVID-19 was critical.

“No matter who you are or where you live, the threat of COVID-19 has presented challenges to life as we know it,” Mrs Forrest said.

“Supporting families with young children to ensure educational needs are met is something I am particularly passionate about, which can’t be forgotten in these challenging times.

“A Smart Start is such an impactful program and we are proud to be able to contribute to extending its reach.”
