Cycling legend powers through to win over-75 age group at Steadyrack Gran Fondo National Championships

Harvey cycling legend Michael Morton has powered through to win over-75 age group at Steadyrack Gran Fondo National Championships. Finishing 466 out of 723, Morton joined amateur riders during the 81.6km race, coming out on top of his age category. The event sees riders from 16 to 75-plus take over the streets in Perth and Kings Park with amateur riders given the chance to tackle the 13.6km circuit with their professional counterparts. Eighteen national champions were crowned across men’s and women’s age categories, winning the green-and-gold jersey of gran fondo national champion. Playing the achievement down, Morton said, he just enjoys cycling and the health benefits that come with it. South West Cycle Club were proud of all their members who took part in the event, but in a statement spoke highly of Morton’s work. “Morton’s aggressive racing saw him bridging across to groups of riders decades his junior, matching their pace and proving that experience and determination can more than compensate for the passage of time,” the statement said. “His display serves as inspiration to riders of all ages in the club.”
