South West weather: Residents urged to prepare for flooding, dangerous winds as another cold front hits region

South West residents are being urged to prepare for flooding and dangerous winds as the region continues to be lashed by wet weather.

The Bureau of Meteorology has urged people in Harvey, Collie, Preston and Blackwood River catchments to prepare for possible minor flooding over coming days.

The South West is expected to be hit with a windy front experienced in the region about three to four times a year, with gusts up to 125km/h expected as another strong cold front moves across the State.

Rainfall totals of 110mm have been recorded in the Harvey, Collie, Preston and Blackwood river catchments since 9.00am this morning.

Heavy rains of about 15-25 mm with isolated totals up to 40 mm are expected in the flood watch area through to tomorrow.

Rapid and flash flooding of low lying areas is expected to occur, with the potential closure of both main and secondary roads.

Rivers are due to rise and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services is warning motorists to not drive into flood waters and remain alert for hazards on the roads such as fallen powerlines, trees and loose debris.

Self-help sandbagging locations are open from 2pm today at Harvey Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade, 21 Harper Street and opposite Collie Fire Station, 130 Forrest Street (BYO sandbags).
