While Peter Fernie cruises to another leading trainer award at the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club, the big races of the upcoming Round could be pivotal in deciding other season accolades that are much closer.

They include a keen battle between Lucy Fiore and Natasha Faithfull, who continue to go neck-and-neck for jockey of the year.

Following the KBRC’s August 25 meeting, they were tied on 18 points.

A similar battle is playing out for strapper of the year, with Charlotte Skerritt just ahead of Ricky Connor.

Fernie’s unassailable 48-point lead over Paul Tapper for the KBRC’s trainer of the year award was complemented by five winners at last Sunday’s Coolgardie Racing Club meeting.

It included wins in three consecutive races, and he also leads Gary Bowen for leading strike rate trainer at 20.7 per cent, compared to 11.8 per cent.

Chanel Cooper boasts a handy lead over Zephen Johnston-Porter for apprentice of the year.

The KBRC hosts its next meeting on September 22, highlighted by the $125,000 Boulder Cup (2100m).
