Judy Whyman is reliving her childhood in the most fun way possible — zipping across town in her bright yellow 1965 Mini Moke with husband Dean.

Bought off an old workmate, the Moke brings Judy back to her early days growing up in New Zealand, when her parents bought a new army-green 1966 Mini Moke.

It was fate when a car that was the same year and model came up for sale.

“I worked for a guy and he was going off to the army and he said he’s got a car to sell — it was a Mini Moke, and I asked what year, he said it was a 1966,” Judy said.

“So I ring my mum to see what year ours was — and it was a 1966, so we bought it off him.

“We sent it to a guy who was going to strip it down, he said it was going to take him eight months; eight years later, we ended up taking it off him because he was draining us of money.

“There was another guy around the corner who finished it off in a year.

“When I went to register it, they said it was a 1965, not a 1966.”

Part-way through a trip across Australia, Judy and Dean are set to receive their new motorhome shortly to continue their journey from Queensland across our great sunburnt country.

Their plans include a second trip to Wave Rock, continuing up to Geraldton, across Australia’s top, back to Queensland and down to Victoria.

Their Mini Moke will be along for the ride, towed at the back of the van for shopping trips in town, wherever they stop on their journey.

“It’s just a fun thing; it’s just such a fun car, driving around with no roof on,” Judy said.

“I love the colour.

“We don’t take it out much but we do get a lot of attention.

“You go out there and you’re just so happy. It’s a fun little toy car.”
