St John Ambulance has slammed the actions of two men who allegedly assaulted volunteers after a drunken incident in Leonora on Monday.

Leonora Police yesterday took two men into custody and enforced a takeaway alcohol sales ban until at least Thursday due to a fight in Leonora which resulted in emergency services personnel being verbally and physically assaulted.

Both men, one from Kalgoorlie-Boulder and another from Perth, have been charged with assault.

The booze ban was said to be due to a number of factors, not solely related to the above incident.

St John Country Ambulance Operations head Justin Fonte labelled the assault “abhorrent” and “unacceptable”.

“Our clinical volunteers were attending to a routine call when two unknown males, unrelated to the job they were attending, decided to interfere and verbally and physical abuse the officers who were just trying to provide assistance to people in need,” he said.

“We have measures in place aimed at safeguarding our people against this sort of behaviour as best we can and continue to look at new ways we can minimise these incidents.

“Again, it is extremely disappointing that this has occurred at this time, particularly during this challenging health climate — it has never been more important for the community to come together and support each other.”
