About 150 students and staff at East Manjimup Primary School this week began their participation in the Statewide DETECT program.

The program aims to test people from identified groups — such as schools, health care workers, retail workers and hospitality workers — who are not showing symptoms.

More than 18,000 people across the State will be tested as part of the DETECT program, with the first phase finishing this week.

To date, no cases of COVID-19 have been identified.

A total of 126 students and 20 staff were tested on Monday and yesterday at East Manjimup Primary School students as part of the first phase of testing.

“Those same students and staff will again be tested early in July and early in August,” principal Michael Smith said.

“The students went along fine, they were very calm.

“Most of the students, parents and staff from Year 4 to 6 will also participate in filling out a survey next term.”

The survey will ask how COVID-19 has affected people.

As part of testing this week, participants had their mouths and noses swabbed.
