A couple of weeks ago we met up with Alex from AJ’s Cafe down on the Beresford foreshore and he introduced us to his German sausages and special sauce.

On the other side of the foreshore development, towards Dome, we found Leanne Wilson, who opened her cafe Kai Lani in January.

“I’m from Geraldton,” Leanne said. “Just over 20 years now.

“I own another business and wanted to do something down here that was an expression of interest in the council and I applied for this pop-up coffee shop in here and was successful.

“We have had a lot of fun here. Lots of family, kids and dogs. It’s such a beautiful spot, on a warm spring day, with music in the background, catching up with family and friends.

“The foreshore development allows people to go walking, scooter along with kids and dogs, and enjoy this environment.”

We agreed the foreshore is well done and looked after by the City.

Twenty years ago there was a railway line along here and people had to dodge trains to try to use a bit of what was the beach.

There are several more interesting places where Geraldton people can gather and enjoy themselves along this development. It has been good to look at this diversion from gardens — although the whole foreshore was created using a lot of plants which are native to our coastal regions and are a pleasure to stroll through.

In the coming months, Friends of Geraldton Gardens are looking at extending the proposed Geraldton Botanic Garden in Maitland Park. Go there and check out the small demo garden which has been successfully established near the roundabout at the cathedral. You will find interesting native Mid West flora of many species. Some of the ground covers will do well in our sandy coastal soils.

The plants now have name tags, and this will help you make choices for your own native garden.

On September 25, Ronnie’s garden club members are meeting at our Fitzgerald Street community garden. We will, over the next few weeks, visit members’ gardens so this column will return to describing conventional gardens around Geraldton.
