Three teenagers taken to hospital after car slams into pole at Malaga intersection

A teenager is fighting for life after being badly injured when the car she was in slammed into a pole in Perth’s north. Emergency services rushed to the scene in Malaga after a 2003 Toyota Corolla crashed into a power pole at the intersection of Malaga Drive and Mulgul Road about 11pm on Thursday. The 18-year-old woman, a passenger in the vehicle, suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Royal Perth Hospital. She was placed in an induced coma and remained in critical condition on Friday morning. A 16-year-old female driver and an 18-year-old man escaped injury but were taken to hospital as a precaution. Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash. Police Commissioner Col Blanch said the Malaga incident came after “far too much tragedy on our roads”. “It does come down to driver responsibility, paying attention, and particularly paying attention to the road and what’s in front of you, rather than what’s in the car,” he said. Mr Blanch reaffirmed his support for an emergency summit between government and road safety bodies amid the worst road toll on WA roads in a decade, which currently sits at 117. “I’m pleased the Premier has called for that (summit) — I think this is about getting into the heads of drivers, and it is about making a very clear message to drivers because that’s where it all starts.” Major Crash investigators are conducting an examination of the scene and are appealing for any witnesses to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report the information online here.
