A 17-year-old boy has been charged over the alleged stabbing of another teenager during a wild brawl at an illegal beach party on the NSW north coast at the weekend.

The boy was arrested just before 11am on Tuesday at Lismore Police Station, where he was charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and affray.

He was refused bail to appear before a children’s court on Wednesday.

Witnesses used smartphones to video the brawl, which happened about 8pm near First Ave at Sawtell – near Coffs Harbour – on Sunday night.

In the footage, bystanders can be seen trying to intervene while two boys fight, before a knife is then seen and a 16-year-old boy, wearing a white shirt, is repeatedly stabbed in his back, abdomen and arm, leaving him fighting for life.

Police say the boy was stabbed multiple times.

The injured teenager was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital with critical injuries, police said.

Police were told a group of about 100 people were in attendance at the beach when a fight broke out.

Officers from Coffs-Clarence Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police believe the victim was attacked while trying to protect a teenage girl who had been involved in a separate fight.

They said the stabbed teen’s condition had improved.
