A decade of agony is over for Simon Whitlock following Australia’s World Cup of Darts triumph in Frankfurt.

Whitlock and teammate Damon Heta sealed Australia’s maiden World Cup title with a 3-1 final defeat of Wales.

“It is life-changing,” an emotional Whitlock said.

“It feels amazing – I have dreamt about this moment my entire life and I’ve finally got there.”

Whitlock was part of the Australian team that lost to England in the 2012 World Cup final in Hamburg.

He was beaten in both of his singles matches before failing with two darts that would have won Australia the trophy in the sudden-death doubles leg.

However, Whitlock wasn’t about to waste another chance in a final and paid tribute to Perth-born Heta for his role in the success.

“I had a great partner. Damon has been amazing. He’s a great friend, and he’s the best player on the planet right now,” the 53-year-old Cessnock product said.

Heta, 34, was also full of praise for Whitlock.

“Simon dragged me through the beginning,” Heta said.

“I’m stoked for Simon and stoked for Australia with all the support we’ve had back home.

“Everything we are sacrificing being here and we’ve got the title in the bag. It’s an amazing feeling.”

On a busy final day of the tournament, the Australians beat Belgium and top seeds England before accounting for Welsh pair Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton in the decider.

Price said: “We weren’t at our best in the final but Simon and Damon played fantastic.

“I said at the beginning of the tournament we’d play Australia in the final, but I predicted that we would win, so I was wrong there.”
