Rider Peter Hall opened Tuesday’s Bunbury Turf Club meeting in style after guiding three-year-old Special Beau to victory by 1.3 lengths over Instant Hit in the Hits Jesse and Juelz Maiden (1410m).

Trained by Grant and Alana Williams, the $5 pre-race favourite maintained a solid outside line early as Hall eventually moved him alongside Instant Hit and Red Hot Tip, who both held solid claims heading into the home straight.

The three-year-old managed to kick home strongly in the closing stages and secured his third placed finish from as many starts.

Capel-based trainer Bruce Watkins had plenty to cheer about in the Hits Hughesy and Kate Maiden (1008m), with two of his runners finishing inside the top three.

Despite a valiant effort from Kate Witten, who was aboard London Miss, Watkins’ filly finished 1.8 lengths behind Cuballing, who saluted on debut.

London Miss’ stablemate, River Beau, who entered the race on the back of excellent trial form, finished third.

There was also a lot to like about the display from Justin Warwick’s filly Petticoat Junction, who defeated Malakhi by 0.5 lengths in the Tabtouch — Better Your Bet Maiden (1690m).

After running along comfortably for the majority of the journey, rider Natasha Faithfull managed to get her purring along nicely in the final 200m, much to the delight of the winning connections.

Racing returns to the Bunbury Turf Club next Wednesday.
