The Collie Eagles kicked 12 goals to six with the aid of the breeze to set up a 56-point victory over Carey Park at Kelly Park today.

Neither side was able to kick a goal towards the Xavier Street end of the ground until the final quarter, as the Eagles defeated the Panthers 14.9 (92) to 6.0 (36).

In his 100th game, Eagles midfielder Teke Vernon had a game to remember, combining with Kyle Shanahan to lead in the midfield.

Collie small forward Blair Malatesta looked as if he was going to have a day out, kicking three of the Eagles’ five first quarter goals, before hurting his hamstring early in the second quarter.

Dominant midfielder Corey Griggs was also injured, requiring stitches in his head after an incident in the first quarter, leaving the Eagles just two on the bench.

After failing to kick a goal in the first quarter, the Panthers started the second with a flurry, as James Wallam (two goals) and Jordan Yarran got on the end of some magnificent play by midfielders Ben Golowyn, Aiden DeCampo and Chris McMillan.

Carey Park ruckman Jayden Wilson was excellent in the ruck, battling hard and taking a number of marks in an improved performance.

The Panthers’ defence of Sam Brown and Brandon Yarran held strong, keeping the Eagles goalless in the second, while the relentless tackling pressure by Carey Park’s midfield looked like it would turn the game on its head.

But after half-time the Eagles took control, kicking nine goals to just three in a dominant display.

Matt Michael and Matt Blackford lifted in defence for the Eagles, while young forward Jack Davidson booted four goals in an impressive performance.

Eagles coach Clint Swallow said he was pleased that his players toughed out a win.

“Our guys didn’t play as well as we can, but you can only play as well as the opposition let you,” he said.

“We were down in a lot of areas today and didn’t use the ball as well as we normally do.”
