Bunbury puts on 10-race meet
A bumper 10-race meet is on the cards for the Bunbury Turf Club today as the season heads towards a close.
The XXXX Gold Handicap and the Prince of Wales Hotel Handicap will headline the massive day, which will have races from just before noon until mid-evening.
The Lou Luciani-trained Gonzo's Girl will be one of the favourites for the $17,500 XXXX Gold Handicap (2038m), but faces stiff competition from a strong field.
The three-year-old won last start at Bunbury last month across the shorter distance of 1705m to claim her maiden win after three previous attempts.
Experienced jockey Jarrad Noske will again take the saddle of the bay filly as they attempt to push across the line at a stayer's distance.
Luciani said Gonzo's Girl was a big filly who had shown steady improvement.
"Hopefully she can get over a bit more distance," he said.
The filly raced across 2200m at Ascot back in March, but finished eighth in a race which featured strong competition.
Luciani said the start across the greater distance was to test the three-year-old's ability.
"We were trying to get her ready for the Oaks but she wasn't ready at the time," he said.
"If she handles the track conditions, which is likely to be wet, then she should run a good race."
Luciani said he had picked Noske to ride today because of his experience on the filly.
"She (Gonzo's Girl) is not an easy horse to ride at this stage and Jarrad knows her, so we will stick with him," he said. "We want to get her race experienced and educated.
"That will tell us what level she will reach."
