Cadet firefighters blazing a trail
The next generation of Bunbury firefighters has started fine-tuning skills as part of the Bunbury Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade Cadet Program.
The program for youth aged from 11-16 years began last Wednesday and will run until the end of October.
Twelve cadets have so far signed up for the 2015 season - seven of them are new to the program.
Cadet coordinator Richie Snell said the program was vital to ensuring the brigade had future volunteers.
"They are the next generation that comes through the brigade, so it's a really important program," he said.
Mr Snell said the program not only provided cadets with firefighting skills but also helped them develop life skills.
"They start out pretty shy and you see them during the season really start to come out of their shell," he said.
Cadets take part in team-building activities along with hose and fire drills - which they could come across if they progress in the brigade.
Amber Strachan became a member of the active brigade after two years in the cadet program, which she said offered invaluable experience.
"Just the atmosphere and learning new skills through activities that are really hands-on is great," she said.
The 16-year-old said mapping and hose drills were among her favourite activities.
Membership for the cadet program is open throughout the season.
