Celebrating Australia Day

HAYDN TUIASouth Western Times

The aroma of a cooked Aussie breakfast hung in the air this morning as people gathered in Bunbury on a sun-kissed Australia's Day.

With the mercury expected to climb to 39C today, heatwave conditions kept attendance lower than previous years but spirits were high.

In true Aussie style, volunteers manned barbies in Bicentennial Square bright and early as the most active braved the heat to participate in the Bunbury Runner's Club Fun Run.

Iconic songs performed by Bunbury City Band added to the festive atmosphere as people awaited the presentation of the Premier's Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards.

Young Citizen of the Year went to 18-year-old Brodie Stewart in recognition of the accomplished musician's work in the local music scene.

Merv Mancer was awarded with Citizen of the Year for his tireless and extensive contributions to the region's seniors community.

Community Group or Event of the Year Award went to the City of Bunbury Surf Life Saving Club in recognition of its volunteers' work patrolling the city's beaches.

A half-hour fireworks spectacular starting 8.30pm will round out the city's Australia Day celebrations.
