The Dardanup Shire Council voted 5-3 on November 6 to defer a motion on reduced Eaton Recreation Centre gym memberships for shire residents aged 80 and over.

Under the proposal tabled by Cr Janice Dow, all residents within the 80 and over age demographic would be entitled to an annual membership of $50, and all impacted residents who had already paid for a membership would be reimbursed.

Without the initiative, Cr Dow feels residents may be tempted to join neighbouring facilities outside of the council’s jurisdiction.

“The Shire of Harvey has just introduced free lifetime memberships for their 80 years-plus residents,” she wrote.

Despite not ruling out the idea, Dardanup shire president Mick Bennett suggested more information needed to be provided before putting the matter to a vote.

Councillors Dow, Stacey Gillespie and Mark Hutchison voted against deferring the motion, with all councillors stipulating their reasons at length.
