De Campo aims for cup win
Superb six-year-old Handsandwheels is in prime position to deliver victory for Capel trainer reinsman Aiden De Campo in Saturday’s $50,000 Furphy Bunbury Cup MS Pace (2569m) at Donaldson Park.
The gelding enters the feature on the back of a solid victory in the 25,000 Westral 3YO MS Pace (1730m) at Gloucester Park last Friday.
The pace was frenetic early, with De Campo content to race Handsandwheels patiently in seventh place, before things began to slowly tighten up.
Sitting in an outside position, the six-year-old appeared to grow in confidence and made his mark on the final turn heading into the home straight.
Joining a formidable line of three, De Campo had all of the answers in the final 100m.
Although victory on Saturday night would mark his fifth win in seven starts, several others within the 12-strong field have solid claims.
Bunbury-based trainer Brian Clemens should feel confident his gelding I’m Soxy will relish a return to his home track, with semi-regular drive Shannon Suvaljko piloting his Bunbury Cup chances.
Incredibly, the six-year-old has not ran in Bunbury since last year’s cup feature, where he finished third behind Rocknroll Lincoln.
However the most in-form runner on paper is Kiwi superstar Mighty Conqueror, who will be guided by Ryan Warwick.
No stranger to feature race success, Warwick should take heart from the fact the five-year-old has won eight of his last 11 starts, however it will be his first appearance at Donaldson Park.
Later in the evening, something will have to give in the Fact Or Furphy MS Pace (2100m).
All runners within the field of seven have endured a frustrating run of results and will be fiercely determined to turn their fortunes around.
Despite being one of the most in-form mares in regional WA at the start of 2019, Dean Miller’s five-year-old Adda Rockinheaven has struggled to rekindle her form.
But with trainer reinsman Miller committed to persisting with her, she has every chance, given a favourable draw.
