The drummer of a Melbourne-based indie rock group believes Western Australia loves them “more than anywhere else,” as the group arrived in WA on their latest national tour, heading to the South West this weekend. Chart topping four-piece British India kicked off their Rolled Gold tour last weekend in Perth, celebrating the ARIA gold and platinum accreditation of singles ‘Suddenly’ and ‘I Can Make You Love Me’ respectively. Their first west coast appearances since Covid-19 border closures, the group will rock Margaret River’s The River this Friday night. Having already played three Perth shows over the tour’s opening weekend, the band’s drummer Matt O’Gorman said it was “awesome” to be back on stage. “Coming to Perth is so much fun,” he said. “I think people love us more here than anywhere else in the country, you can really tell, they come out in droves to gigs and they’re super-supportive. “It’s been a real celebration of being back in WA, as one of the first places to embrace us outside of Melbourne... it’s amazing.” With many regional stops planned over the 23-day tour, he said he loved the “hospitality” of country towns and was eager to return to the South West. “It’s good to see a side of WA that you don’t normally see,” he said. “The people that come to the shows, everyone’s so hospitable and after the gig people invite you back to their house for a beer and to hang out, and you don’t get that anywhere else, you only get that in WA, so it’s really special.” The celebratory singles aiding the tour were released in both 2021 and 2015, reaching their respective milestones due to increased listening throughout the pandemic. O’Gorman said it was great to see the group’s music still connecting with listeners so long after release. “If you release an album or a single, you only really think about sales and streams in that month,” he said. “No one was expecting (to reach this milestone) the couple of years we’ve had, especially in Melbourne, not being able to be allowed outside and in isolation... to get something like that, it’s just great news. “We’ve been playing that song such a long time and to kind of get that recognition, it’s a really nice feeling.” Tickets for tour are available via https://britishindia.online/tour/.
